What is it I project into the streets (2010) a public performance, Yogyakarta
The first thing you might notice is the sun hitting your eyes and then slowly, showing the sky, a tree, a passerby, yourself. Moving slowly in all directions, Sara Nuytemans hides behind a round mirror, reflecting back upon the viewer. What is it exactly that she is projecting into the streets? Our similarities? Our differences? Fortunes or misfortunes? Having been a frequent resident of the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta, Nuytemans became more and more aware of her foreign appearance. In the bus, an old woman would put a finger to her nose, smiling and telling her it was big and beautiful. People in the street would call out ‘mister’, asking her where she is from. Nuytemans has been living in The Hague and Yogyakarta for the last four years and she feels part of both communities. These comments, in essence friendly words, simultaneously emphasize a certain alienation. Hiding and standing out become two sides of the same coin. In her performance What is it I project into the streets, this duality meets in the middle. A glance. A reflection.
